LEAF TYPE:

The Thumbai plant is a member of the mint family and is native to tropical Asia. It is found throughout India, from the Himalayas to Ceylon, and is also found in Bangladesh, China, Malaysia, and Mauritius.

SEASONS:

The Thumbai plant, also known as Leucas aspera, flowers from September to February, and then grows vegetatively for a month. The plant flowers for an average of 70 days, but can flower up to mid-March if the soil is wet enough. The plant's flowers cease production in February or March, and the plant then dries up and withers.

PLANT TYPE:

The Thumbai plant is an annual herb or undershrub that can grow to be 15–60 cm (6–24 in) tall, The Thumbai plant has a quadrangular stem that is much branched and covered in a thick waxy cuticle, The Thumbai plant has leaves that are linear or narrowly oblong-lanceolate, obtuse, and narrowed at the base, The Thumbai plant has small, white flowers that are directly attached to the base without a peduncular stalk.

The Thumbai plant has many traditional uses, including: Medicine: It is used as an antipyretic, insecticide, and remedy for snake bites and scorpion stings.  Food: The leaves are used to fragrance food. Mosquito repellent: The leaves are an effective mosquito repellent. Indigestion: The juice of the leaves mixed with honey is used as a remedy for indigestion and stomach ache. The plant is used traditionally as an antipyretic and insecticide.
